Retraining a retired racehorse: planning the next step.

A new career starts with understanding the individual horse. A thoroughbred leaving racing brings its own experience, routine and temperament. At AC Equine, the emphasis is on rest, assessment and a progressive retraining programme, rather than expecting every horse to follow the same timetable.

For racehorse owners and trainers

If you are planning a horse’s retirement from racing, an initial conversation helps establish its background and what it may need next. Useful information to discuss includes its racing and training history, current routine, temperament, previous injuries and any ongoing care requirements. These details help guide a conversation about an appropriate next step.

Racehorse retraining for owners and trainers

From racing routines to a different way of working

Retraining involves more than teaching a new discipline. Time to settle, consistent handling and an individual care plan provide a foundation for the work that follows. Schooling, hacking, pole work or jumping may form part of a horse’s programme, depending on its needs and progress.

Considering a retrained thoroughbred?

Finding the right partnership matters. Before enquiring about a horse, think about your riding experience, the support available to you, your facilities and the activities you hope to enjoy. Discuss these with Aimée alongside the horse’s temperament, progress and care needs. A photograph alone cannot establish whether a horse is the right match.

Can owners and trainers discuss a horse leaving racing?

Yes. Tell Aimée about the horse’s background and current needs so that the appropriate retraining package and bursary can be discussed. Read about our package for owners and trainers.
